Chocolate, Chakras, and Catching Up

Hello there!
Happy end of April, haha! Man, does time fly when your a busy gal! April is shaping up to be my most successful month! I feel as though I am settling in to my classes as a teacher. Of course, I will always be a student, in many ways, but currently, I am enjoying finding my confidence when sitting in front of students. I imagine that if I continue to be authentic, continue to expand my knowledge, and continue to listen to my students, May will be an even better month!

In May, Modern Milk will be holding several free community classes to try to draw people in to the amazing space. If you are local or surrounding Scottsdale, AZ I HIGHLY recommend you check them out. I've bragged about them before, but it really is a great resource for any expecting and new mother! We've introduced a toddler yoga class, for babes crawling to 2 years old. I get to take Leia to it which is great, but she is still trying to find her way in the class. She is used to having ALL of mommy's attention, and while I am teaching, I can only give her so much of that attention. She notices, and begins to act out. I know that with time, this will only get better, but it can be frustrating. If another mothers child were to act out in the same way, it wouldn't even phase me. However, I have set unrealistic standards for myself and Leia, and I am realizing that sometimes having the teachers kid be the one who has a total meltdown can be good haha. I know she is picking up on the yoga though. She can now do hands at the heart, down dog, three legged down dog, tree pose, and a few pranyamas (breath work). It's amazing when suddenly your daughter will calm herself down from a tantrum by taking a deep breath! Anyways, at the end of May, I will be teaching a Chocolate Yoga class! It is my first time ever doing anything like this and I am so excited! I'm going to use a locally made, wonderfully infused chocolate and tie them in to certain yoga poses. Do a few poses, take a bite of chocolate! How wonderful does that sound?! As soon as the flyer's are posted, I will post a link here!

Things are also going great at Aloha Yoga! (BTW, it is so freeing to only be employed at 2 studios. They are in completely different areas of town and so it gives me the freedom to promote both equally). We tried doing a Family Yoga class, but it didn't stick so we are doing a VinYin style and I am SO excited! I got the idea to tie in the chakras to the classes (at least for the first 7 weeks) and the owner thought it would go perfectly with her own free Intro to the Chakras class. So far, there seems to be a lot of interested people and positive buzz surrounding the class. The first class will be on Muladhara, or the Root Chakra. I just finished creating the layout for the class and I think it is going to be great! My goal for each class is to get people in touch with each of these energy centers in the body and to find out if there are ones that are closed, open, balanced, or in disarray. Even if you don't believe in "energy centers", there are bundles of nerves exactly where each chakra is located. I've created a special sequence that will target each chakra, thus targeting those nerve bundles. I hope it is an informational and healing experience for all that attend. We've also introduced Toddler Yoga, and so far it is picking up! I expected a full class, but I am remembering that the people who need it will come to it when they are ready. Leia likes this class the best, I think because the space is huge and she has plenty of space to run around. Plus, the kids are older and more interactive! I am excited to see where this class goes as well.

Everything else in my little life is going great! I have started the regimen of prenatal, fish oils, and probiotics as we get closer and closer to trying for baby #2! I still have a "weight goal" in mind of where I would like to be before getting pregnant, but I know that if I continue to eat healthy and move my body, I will get there. My biggest problem right now is trying to cut way down on caffeine. I am realizing just how addicted to it I am and it definitely is weighing heavy on my mind. I am hoping that my doing this chakra series myself, I will find my root cause for holding onto this addicting and thus, letting it go and creating a healthier home for our 2nd babe. We are in a transitional phase, but we are ready for what lies ahead!

I am off to bed now! Letting the wind of the storm outside lullaby me to sleep. Have an awesome week everyone!

Toddler Yoga and Family Yoga

Happy Spring everyone! Or if your in AZ, whatever you call this season before triple digits. I've had lots of new things happen over the past few weeks and I am so excited to share! Personally, I am happy to report that everyone in our house FINALLY seems to be sickness free! Thank the lord! Finally getting back into our normal routines, healthy eating, working out, etc!

Yoga-wise, everything is going great! I've added a Mommy and Me Movers Yoga class at Modern Milk. For those local, it is Wednesday morning at 10:30am. Perfect to get energy out before nap time. Ages will be crawling to 2 years! I'm so grateful that a place like Modern Milk exists for moms. If you are expecting or are a new mom, please come check this place out. Stephanie, the owner, is a former labor and delivery nurse and certified lactation consultant. They have weekly support groups, breastfeeding 101 groups, infant sleeping classes, and of course all the prenatal and mommy and me yoga you could ask for! Check out the website here for class times and pricing.

Another fun venture has been adding Toddler and Family Yoga to Aloha Yoga and Hula in Chandler! The toddler yoga is for ages 18 months to 4 years old and the time is Fridays at 3pm! It is still in it's testing phase, but I know the want for a class like this is high so I'm hoping that attendance picks up! Family Yoga is Sunday at 4pm. This class is for anyone ages 6 and up! You can come with kids, or feel free to come just by yourself or with your husband and friends. I've designed the class as a fun beginner flow style!

I did end up dropping two classes from my weekly schedule, one by circumstances and one by choice. My fellow co-teacher at Modern Milk did a great blog post recently on how we sometimes glorify being busy. Society seems to value us as better functioning members in society if we have our plates full. However, where is the glorification in having so much prep work to do for classes your teaching that you don't have any patience and energy left for your family? I am teaching double-digit classes a week. A lot of people think that it's as simple as time spent driving to the studio and then teaching an hour or a 75 minute class. The truth however is I spend at least 5-10 hours prepping all my classes for the week. Mostly I do this at night after Leia has gone to bed, which means I'm working exhausted. Now, I love teaching. I find that my body is getting used to practicing almost daily while I teach (I like to run through the sequence with the students as a lot of them need visual cues over verbal ones), I love teaching Prenatal and Mommy and Me and then relaxing into my Yin and Restorative classes. Right now, I feel like my body can handle everything! Plus, the money isn't half bad. I love being able to contribute to our bills and still have money for coffee, shopping, spoiling haha. However, I had to face the fact that I was getting burnt out. So the Universe took care of one class, and I took care of another. Of course, I got offered to teach another class on a day that better suits me :) So I will stick with it and see how long I can go on teaching 12 classes a week!

Enough of that! Do you have plans for Easter? I am off from all teaching jobs! So my 1 and only goal is to RELAX! Hopefully you can do a bit of the same!

Namaste! Until next time!

A Little Update Post

I actually have time and energy to blog a little tonight, so I figured in addition to promoting myself (hehe) I will also get personal. First, my sweet butterfly baby is sick :(. We have been so blessed to have a rarely sick child. In her 18 months on earth, she has had 2 colds (that lasted roughly 3 days each) and 2 diaper rashes. Well, I knew tonight something was different, she has been SO clingly, uncomfortable, coughing, feverish, and just miserable. I took her into urgent care and sure enough, she has her first ear infection and the start of pneumonia! How scary! She was able to take a dose of medicine tonight, so I hope she starts feeling better in the morning.

I stopped babysitting full time this week. It was a scary step, but I have had so many opportunities for my yoga career, that I couldn't devote to because I was just so busy during the day. Many people don't realize just how much planning goes into 1 yoga class. I like to offer different things with each class. Whether it is sequencing, themes, etc. I couldn't properly prepare for my classes in the way I liked because I had way too much going on. Now that I am adding 6 extra weekly classes this month, that will bring the total number of classes to 12! I am seriously blown away! I never would have thought I would be able to teach yoga as a living, let along teach pregnant mothers and moms and babies! I am sad though, I will miss my adopted little squish baby every week! Leia will miss having someone to "play" with haha!

To keep myself from getting stressed out, I've been really honing in on my personal practice. With the addition of Toddler Yoga and Family Yoga this month, I have decided I need to start practicing more around Leia, and gauging how involved she wants to be. So far, she is pretty happy playing with the yoga blocks and my yoga towel haha! She does do an adorable down dog and forward fold!! I will try to get pictures next time!

I have been saying these little mantras to myself over and over lately. First, I struggle with comparison. A lot. The two most important aspects in my life are being a mother and being a yoga teacher. These are two subjects that also have a ton of different perspectives and opinions on. It's easy to get caught up on comparing yourself to other people, some of which you only know through Instagram or Facebook. While I love having the use of social media at my finger tips, I hate how sometimes scrolling through my feed will make me like I'm less than that person. I see skinny, toned, Lululemon wearing women getting into gorgeous arm balances with such ease. Here I am in my Walmart $12 pants and I hurt my back, so I am only doing Restorative poses. While I am still losing weight, it's at a much slower pace then I am happy with and I will always have the mommy pooch. Then I see the mommas that do creative home schooling or take their babes on sweet outdoor adventures. Sometimes, I just wish I could get Leia to watch tv so I can have a break! All this comparison really begins to ware me down. It's been hard trying to talk myself up when there are times I feel like I am such a failure! I know I'm not: I've got a smart, healthy, laid back babe. I've got 12 yoga classes a week that I teach. I've reached my pre-pregnancy weight (not that it should matter, but it's an accomplishment to me). I am healing my body so that I can practice deeper and get into those beautiful balancing poses. I have everything going for me, and yet I still feel like it isn't enough. Our minds are tricky aren't they?

Trying to find balance amongst life is not easy. No matter whether you seek it in work, personal life, family life, with friends....it can be an uphill battle just to feel like everything is running smoothly! Just because I teach 12 classes a week doesn't mean I am a better yoga teacher than one that teaches once a week. Just because someone can get into Handstand like it's a joke, doesn't mean that they are more enlightened. Just because my class may not have resonated with the students, doesn't mean I am a bad teacher. All these things I've attached myself to could all leave at any moment. I am working on letting those attachments go and just focusing on the HERE and NOW. Because I don't have any control over anything, except for how I show up in this world.

Phew, enough of that! Hopefully there are still some people reading so that they can see my updated schedule for the month of March (thank you if you are).

Classes Taught This Week **New Class Alert**

Hi friends! Is it seriously almost the end of January? HOW!? Wow time flies! I will say that so far, I am living up to my New Years goals! I could do better, and will do better, but I am happy with the progress I've made thus far! How are you doing with your resolutions?

I've added a new class to my schedule starting this week! Yin Restorative Thursday at 7pm at Aloha Yoga! Here is a little bit about Yin Yoga from an excellent resource, yinyoga.com:

Yin Yoga has the same goals and objectives as any other school of yoga; however, it directs the stimulation normally created in the asana portion of the practice deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues (which we are calling the yang tissues). Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice.

Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

We will do a yin style at the beginning of class, and then follow with a restorative practice. In restorative yoga, nourishing poses like childs pose, legs up the wall, and supported bridge are held anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes to create ultimate relaxation and release! This will be the perfect after work flow to get you ready for bed and rested for your Friday morning!

Here is a link to my facebook page where you can find more information on the class:

January 1st, 2015!

As stated in my previous post, one of my goals for 2015 was to establish an at home yoga practice. This is embarrassing, but I usually only do a practice at home once a week...I do practice yoga while I teach, because frankly I like to, but it is definitely different then just focusing on myself.
So when a friend shared that Yoga International was doing a 30 for 30 daily yoga video challenge, I jumped right on! You sign up through Yoga International's website (here) and every day you get an email with a 30 minute yoga video you can do right in the comfort of your home! How easy is that?! This happens throughout the whole month of January (hence, 30 for 30). The first video was fun! Lots of standing and dynamic postures, which I love!

I also joined in on an Instagram yoga challenge! It is called #rebelresolutions. They have 30 different poses to do, one for each day in January. Today was Akho Mudha Svanasana (aka down ward facing dog). You can see my DD here.

So, how did the first day of the New Year treat you? Did you follow through yet with any of your resolutions?

New Years Resolutions

Happy New Years Eve!
With the rebel princess napping, I thought I would take a minute to post my resolutions, goals, hopes, etc for the upcoming year! They are simple, and probably are the same as the majority of people, but it's still important for me to write them out and send those thoughts out into the Universe!

  • Create a daily home yoga practice. I struggle with filling up my "free time" with things other then scrolling through my Facebook feed or pinning wonderful things on Pinterest. This year, I want to dedicate at least 30 minutes every day to a home yoga practice. Whether it's physical or only meditation.
  • Have more patience. This in particular as we are approaching our first year with a budding toddler :)
  • Be a better yoga teacher. You are always the student in yoga (and in life). There is always much more to learn, more to discover. My goal is to trust myself as a yoga teacher, and trust in my ability to lead my students into a wonderful place the hour + that they are with me.
  • Budget better. Growing up, any free money we had was usually spent right away on fun things. I still have the mentality and I know it stresses my husband out. I got our food budget finally under control, now with me working and earning extra money, I need to get my personal budget under control.
  • Pay more on my student loans. Speaking of money, in February of this year I will start paying the loan for my YTT program. It is only S96/month, but my goal will always be to pay more on it. Whether it is only a few dollars more, or a hundred more.
  • Be less attached. Including (but not limited to): electronics, expectations, material, and monetary.
  • Become a doula. This is so important to me and I am not sure if it will be feasible this year, but I sure will try!
  • Finally, and perhaps the most important one, start planning our conscious conception. The hubby and I have talked a lot about when we want another baby. We don't want there to be too big of an age gap between our children, but we understand the importance of letting our bodies and our budget get to a healthier point where we will be ready for another child. The earliest we will start trying to get pregnant will be at the end of 2015, but I want this to be my healthiest year yet, and Joe's too. Conscious conception is a process in where you get rid of the toxins in your body and life, and replace them with only good, healthy, wonderful things (think food, relationships, etc) as you prepare to have another child. It's like a 9 month+ journey, just to prepare to be your best self and give your baby the best while it's in your womb.
Those are my goals, wishes, dreams for the upcoming year. What are yours?

Looking Forward To 2015

Hi friends!
So today I met with Stephanie, the owner of a new store called Modern Milk opening up in Scottsdale. Here is her bio, as posted on the website:
"Stephanie, Founder of Modern Milk, has a long history in Women's Health. She began her career as a Postpartum Nurse and later moved on to work in Labor & Delivery and High-Risk Antepartum. She then received her degree as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and left the hospital setting for the office setting, where she cared for a wide variety of patients at Camelback Women's Health.  After having her own children and meeting other moms, she noticed there was a strong need for breastfeeding support in the community, which is why she started Modern Milk. Stephanie loves being able to combine her passion for women's health with her passion for helping other moms. She believes that all moms need support and the more moms she can help, the better!"

I am very excited to announce that I will be part of this amazing facility, as a prenatal and mommy and me yoga teacher! My tentative schedule will be Sunday mornings, 10am-11:15am Prenatal and 11:30am-12:30pm Mommy and Me (6weeks up to crawling). There isn't a for sure set date of opening, but she is hoping to get the store opened by January 19th, with my classes being taught the 21st!

Also starting in 2015, I will begin teaching Prenatal Yoga at Ha Yoga in Tempe on Wednesday evenings! Class with go from 6:30-7:30pm! I met with Nikki, the owner who is one rad chick! She is also a doula, so I look forward to chatting all about that once I figure out where I will get my training from. You can check out all the info on her studio here!

I am no longer teaching Prenatal Yoga at Aloha Yoga in Chandler. In the new year, I will have the same time slot, Saturday mornings 10:45-11:45am but I will be teaching Restorative Yoga! I am nervous because I don't have a lot of experience teaching restorative, but I know that it will work out and hopefully bring more students into the studio! It is one of the most beautiful spaces!

Of course, you can still find me Sundays at 1pm at Spa Lamar in Scottsdale! Next Sunday is Mommy and Me, at 1pm! The class is for babies 6 weeks up to crawling! We sing, move, and just have fun laughing and playing with the babies! Hope to see you there!

I hope the new year brings in everything you are wanting and a few dashes of things you are needing! Make it your best year yet!

Namaste :)

WYCFMTW December 20-21st & Some Thoughts On The PYTT This Past Weekend

Hello friends!
Here is where you can take a class from me this week :)

Prenatal Yoga at the gorgeous Aloha Yoga in Chandler! Click here for some great holiday pricing on yoga classes! Your first class is free!

This week is Mommy & Me Yoga at Spa Lamar! I love this class! Seeing the littles grow every week and enjoying movement with their mommas :) This class is open to ALL caregivers! For babies 6 weeks up to crawling! 1pm-2pm!

After completing the prenatal yoga teacher training at swiha this past weekend (for the 2nd time) I have this renewed passion about natural births (true natural births) and helping women own their power as a mother. As soon as I am able to, I want to do my doula training, preferably through Sacred Pregnancy. I just have this passion about the whole birthing process, and want my life to really be about building women up as they prepare to give birth and raise babies! I could go on and on about my love for everything related to this topic, but the babes are waking up from their nap! Until next time my friends,
Namaste!

Things To Look Forward To In 2015

Hello! I just wanted to let you guys know of some exciting changes happening to my schedule for the New Year!
First, Saturdays at 10:45am with now be Restorative/Yin Yoga at Aloha Yoga and Hula. The class will still be a safe and soothing practice for expecting mommas. A restorative class is a great way to start the weekend feeling renewed and recharged! Yoga gurus say if yoga were a buffet, restorative would be the dessert bar :) But this class won't make you gain weight, just love!

I will also start teaching Wednesday evenings at the newly expanded Ha Yoga in Tempe! Classes will be Wednesday from 6:30-7:30pm. I will have more information on both of these classes in the upcoming weeks!

There are no classes scheduled this weekend as I am assisting the wonderful Gila Shire in the Prenatal Yoga Course at SWIHA. I think there is still time to register (the first portion of the class starts tonight, at 6pm). This class was life changing for me and my career. I highly recommend it, whether your a yoga teacher looking to add a new teaching skill, someone passionate about women's birth rights and natural births, or just a momma wanting to have more information about safe yoga practices while pregnant! It is a beautiful, informative, powerful class that I highly recommend!

That is all for now, hope your week has been a great one! Write soon,
Namaste

She is also a doula, which I hope to be one day. You don't have to be a YTT student to sign up for the class, in fact most aren't! Why Prenatal Is So Beneficial

Hi friends!
So you may have figured out that I teach prenatal yoga...and you may have even noticed that I am pretty passionate about it. You also may be wondering why I think it is so beneficial. Sure it's good to move your body and "exercise" right? Yes, but when you are pregnant, the specific movements that you will find in a prenatal class can not only impact your new body, but the life growing inside it as well.

Say whaaaat.

I know. So, here is a little (by all means NOT inclusive) list of why you should consider doing Prenatal Yoga when you are pregnant:

Breath Awareness
This is something you should find in any good yoga class. There are three parts to yoga: asana (poses), meditation, and breath. Bringing attention to the breath has a calming effect on the mind and thus the body. When you are asked to focus on your breath in class (you will usually be taught a breath such as Ujjayi or 3 Part Breath)your drawing your attention inward. Your breaths are deeper, more penetrating. You bring awareness into filling the belly, expanding the rib cage, and lifting the chest. Your oxygen levels literally power up! Amazing. For pregnant women, this can mean bringing the breath back into tight spaces that have been replaced by a growing babe. Having awareness and control of the breath also comes handy when it comes to labor and delivery, regardless of your birth plan. Taking yoga class early in your pregnancy will help you to learn about breathing techniques sooner and help you to use them when it is time to deliver your baby.

Strengthening of the Pelvic Floor
The pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles that form a bowl attached to the pelvis. This muscle supports the vital reproductive and digestion organs, as well as the baby during pregnancy. Why is knowing this important? Well the weight that accumulates on the pelvic floor while pregnant weakens it, which can cause a multitude of problems down the road including prolapse or sagging of the uterus, bladder, and rectum and urinary/stool incontinence. Yikes right? In prenatal yoga classes, you are taught how to strengthen your pelvic floor with the asana and breath. After you go through the process of delivering and stretching all those muscles, you can use these techniques to strengthen them back up. Even if you are having a cesarean section, there is still weight put on the pelvic floor during pregnancy, so these exercises are still very beneficial to you.

Aches, Pains, & Circulation
It's no secret that your body will change while pregnant. Your center of gravity will shift as you get bigger, your blood circulation will be directed towards the baby causing swelling in the extremities, and your shoulders and backs will ache as the number on scale goes up. Fun stuff. So how does yoga help? Well for starters, we work on poses that will ease tension in the typically painful areas of the body during pregnancy. Hint, there are a lot of hip openers! Which are juicy poses for everyone, not just expecting mommas. Hip opening poses such as pigeon, goddess, and bound ankle pose release the lower back, stretch the adductor muscle, and relieve tension. Balancing postures such as tree pose, warrior 3 at the wall, and warrior 2 increase blood circulation throughout the legs, decreasing the chance of blood clots forming and swelling. These postures, modified and done safely, will provide the ultimate relief for any aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Restorative yoga, again modified for a pregnant woman, can also provide deep relaxation and releasing of the muscles.

Prenatal classes are also fun! They are a chance to meet other moms and they provide a moment to bond with your growing baby. They pull together movement with breath and meditation to form a truly unique experience. Check out your local prenatal classes!

You can find myself teaching at Spa Lamar in Scottsdale and Aloha Yoga in Chandler.
Tempe moms, stay tuned for Prenatal coming to you very soon :)
Namaste!

A Little Catching Up

Hello All!

There is much to catch you up on. First, I am in week 3 of my yoga teacher training at SOY (which is a school of SWIHA). I love it there. Talk about being in a place of like-minded people. Everyone there just has this aura of beauty around them. There is so much information to take in and I feel more so now than ever that I am in the right place at the right time. It is awesome.

I started a homeopathy class last Wednesday! I am so intrigued by it. Homeopathy makes so much sense that I can't believe people are still putting their trust in to traditional medicine. While there are cases in which traditional medicine comes in handy (I'm thinking E.R. worthy cases, i.e. stabbing, gun shot, etc) most of our ailments in this world from asthma to cancer to even autism can be treated with homeopathic remedies. Here is a cool website with more information if you are interested. Being as this was my first class, I don't consider myself versed enough to explain it properly yet. By the end of the class, I will be qualified to treat minor, first aid sicknesses! Pretty cool.

I can't wait to start nutrition. There is a rumor going around campus that SWIHA's nutrition program is so good that they are in the process of getting it board certified. Meaning I will have some serious credentials when I finish, not just a diploma. As of now, that is just the rumor, but hopefully I will find out more when I start the program, which will be at the beginning of September.

In related news, Joe and I started Insanity!

People, this is not joke. It is just as hard as the commercials you have seen for it. Actually harder, because watching people do it from the safety of the couch and doing it yourself is way different.

I did about 2 weeks of Insanity a couple of months ago but stopped because---well it was hard. When Joe showed the slightest interest in starting it, I jumped on board and we started the next day. I will admit, doing an Insanity workout and then going to yoga class and doing planks, lunges, and warriors was pretty much craptastic. My whole body hurts. But, in the end, I will have an excellent body (while eating nutritious foods of course) and it will be worth it.

Side note: I'm pretty sure our dogs think they are human. But what else is new?

Also, I gave up on being 100% vegan (for the time being). I don't mean this to sound as a cheap way out, but I just don't have the time to be a proper vegan while making sure I have all my nutrients. I don't eat red meat still and I don't eat most dairy (cheese really is the only exception, but I only have that every once in a while). I will still have delicious vegan recipes on here, but I think I will post some non-vegan ones as well. Like tonight, I am making Garlic Crusted Chicken and Spaghetti Squash. YUM! With a salad on le side. Or maybe some kale chips? That just popped into my head...yeah, lets do kale chips.

Now that you are caught up, if you have any questions, you should message me! Especially on homeopathy. People, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don't just throw garbage into your body because you think you can't afford any other way or that is how you were taught or whatever! We only get one chance on this earth, in the this body, at this time. Make it count. Ignorance is NOT bliss.

Treat your body as a temple. Honor it, put good, loving, healthy, nutritious foods in it. Talk nice to it. I heard someone say they would never talk to anyone the way they talk to themselves. That is powerful. People don't often think about how their thoughts manifest things. Our bodies are capable of reaching homeostasis- a place of true health and balance. Allow yourself to have that. To get to that place.

Again, message me if you have any question-or comment!

~Namaste my friends.
